Non-Profit Audio Conferences
By: Kevin Stith
While audio conferences have been used by the business industry to cut costs and increase revenue, other institutions still use audio conferences to achieve goals that are not profit-oriented.
In Croatia, audio conferencing was first used in 1997 as a means of communication for two educational faculties located in two different towns. Later on, it was used to conduct seminars and workshops for students. One faculty member of a Croatian school also used audio conferencing to hold distance-learning classes in the academic year 2000-2001. Lectures were given on a regular basis through audio conferencing. Students were given assignments via electronic mail. Because the feedback for this particular type of education was very positive, the school even decided to introduce recorded audio conference sessions. This gave their students more freedom to choose the time to attend classes.
However, audio conferencing has not yet reached its peak of popularity in the education sector because most public schools lack the resources to buy audio conferencing facilities. Other factors that hinder its expansion are geographic conditions and cultural traditions. Some schools are located in such remote areas that establishing conferencing signals seems virtually impossible. On the other hand, some parents still prefer traditional classroom education because they believe their children can learn more in such an environment.
Audio conferencing has been useful for employees who wish to pursue continuing education. Through audio conferencing, permanent education has become possible. Employees of certain companies who want to continue to learn about new advancements in their respective fields can take graduate courses via audio conferences.
Social workers also use audio conferencing facilities to mobilize people from different parts of the world to push their advocacies. Through audio conferencing, they are able to communicate with volunteers from other countries and exchange ideas with them. An example of this is an audio conference series held to discuss the common strategies used to end homelessness in the U.S. This was a monthly series of conference calls sponsored by community organizations and a league of politicians.
